Charles Wesley

Charles Wesley has composed almost 7000 hymns, many of which are still sung in the world's churches today. He is called a poet and hymnist of the church. On May 21, 1738, Charles Wesley experienced a spiritual awakening similar to that which happened to his brother John, only three days later. One of Charles Wesley's historical rooms is pictured above.

Pictured is the grave stone of this English minister, born in a pastoral rectory and residence in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England. His education included Westminster School, Christ Church, and the University of Oxford. In 1735 Wesley received his ordination by the Church of England. Afterwards in the same year he served in the state of Georgia, in the USA, with his brother John Wesley, as secretary to the colonial governor, Gravestone - Charles WesleyJames Edward Oglethorpe. However, Charles' poor health required that he discontinue that position, and then he returned to England the following year. Charles was closely associated with the Wesleyan Christians and traveled extensively as a preacher. He lived and worked in Bristol and London, England until the time of his death in 1788.

Lyrics to Christ, The Lord Is Risen Today

1) Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

2) Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where's thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

3) Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!
Christ hath opened paradise, Alleluia!

4) We Rise now where Christ hath led, Alleluia!
Following our exalted Head, Alleluia!
Made like Him, like Him we rise, Alleluia!
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies, Alleluia!

5) Hymns of praise WE NOW DO sing, Alleluia!
Unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia!
Now above the sky He's King, Alleluia!
Where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!
